The Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) play a prominent role in the preparation for the CLAT PG examination. As BNS has replaced IPC, it becomes important to understand both legislations and study them alongside each other.
It must be understood that with the introduction of the new legislation, there is a need to identify the new provisions and procedures included in it. This can be done by drawing a comparison between both the above-mentioned legislations.

Area of Focus

In order to study both legislations effectively, there are certain areas that need focused attention. These include offences against property, offences against women and children, general defences, and offences against the human body. The provisions relating to these offences must be studied properly along with relevant case laws.

Preparation Tips

To study IPC and BNS together for CLAT PG, there is a need for a well-planned strategy. There are several preparation tips that can be applied to study both legislations efficiently:
  • Instead of studying both legislations provision-wise, one can study them chapter-wise. This approach saves time and helps aspirants retain more information in a single sitting. It is advisable to focus on bare acts, with greater emphasis on principles rather than minute details.
  • Practice CLAT PG previous year question papers to understand the pattern of questions and the types of offences that are commonly tested. This helps in preparing the subject with greater accuracy.
  • Additionally, it is important to stay updated with current judgments to understand the evolving interpretation of provisions under the legislation.

Mistakes to Avoid While Preparing IPC and BNS for CLAT PG

  • Avoid memorizing the provisions of both legislations blindly. The provisions should be understood in terms of principles and supported by relevant case laws.
  • Do not ignore either of the legislations. It is essential for the exam to study, retain, and understand both IPC and BNS.

Easy Gains in IPC and BNS

  • Questions on fines and penalties
  • Questions on general defences
  • Questions on new offences

Concluding Remarks

Studying both legislations is not an easy task, but it is certainly not impossible. Consistent practice, a clear understanding of the principles under IPC and BNS, and logical application will help in securing good marks in CLAT PG examination.
