The Bar Council of India (BCI) removed 107 fake advocates from its roll from 2019 to October 2024 to maintain integrity and professionalism in the legal community. Read more about it here!
In a landmark move to uphold the integrity of India’s legal profession, the Bar Council of India (BCI) removed 107 individuals who were falsely listed as advocates in Delhi. This action emphasizes the BCI’s commitment to purging the legal system of unauthorized practitioners and safeguarding the credibility of the profession.
BCI Secretary Srimanto Sen stated that, between 2019 and 2024, thousands of unqualified or misrepresented advocates were struck from the roll after detailed examinations of their qualifications and compliance.
This extensive review under Rule 32 of the BCI Certificate and Place of Practice (Verification) Rules, 2015 uncovered various issues, including falsified or forged documentation, deceptive claims during enrolment, and non-compliance with the BCI’s verification protocols.
In addition, individuals who failed to actively practice law faced removal to preserve the profession’s integrity. These actions highlight the BCI’s firm stance against malpractice, aiming to reinforce a trustworthy legal system for both practitioners and the public.
This move aligns with recent steps by various legal bodies to increase scrutiny over legal qualifications and streamline the process of validating credentials of those practicing in the courts. This includes regular verification drives and stringent identity checks to prevent unqualified individuals from exploiting legal institutions.
In a field that thrives on rigorous standards, young lawyers and students are encouraged to observe the ethical commitments required by the profession. As the legal landscape continues to evolve, maintaining high standards of integrity will be crucial for those entering the field.
Recently, on September 24, 2024, the Bar Council of India (BCI) had also announced the immediate implementation of several new measures across all Centers of Legal Education (CLE) through a press release.
These initiatives aimed to enhance oversight and accountability within legal education institutions and include the introduction of a Criminal Background Check System, mandatory declarations regarding simultaneous degree programs or other academic courses, and employment status.
Additionally, the directives also required compliance with attendance requirements, biometric attendance tracking, and the installation of CCTV cameras. Prompted by recent judicial feedback, the BCI has established these regulations to improve the monitoring of law students’ conduct, attendance, and adherence to academic standards.
