All about CLAT 2022
CLAT 2022 is a national level entrance exam for admissions to candidates in undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) law courses offered at 22 NLUs and several other colleges/ universities.
CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) is held by the Consortium of National Law Universities headed by NLSIU.
The Consortium of National Law Universities (CNLU) on Sunday, 14 November 2021, announced the dates of Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2022. CLAT 2022 is scheduled to be conducted on 8 May, 2022.
In some ways, it is good for the candidates as the Common Law Admission Test will not clash with board exams. However, aspirants should also consider the fact that they will have less time to prepare for CLAT 2022. So, they are advised to kickstart their preparation accordingly. And, that is why, it becomes very important to know about CLAT 2022, its syllabus, pattern along with preparation tips.
CLAT 2022 eligibility
Age Limit: No Upper Age Limit
Qualifying Examination: A candidate must have passed class 10+2 from a recognized board/university.
Minimum Marks: A candidate must have secured 45% aggregate marks (40% marks for SC/ST) in the qualifying exam.
Appearing Candidates: Candidates appearing in class 12th are also eligible to apply for the exam.
For PG program
Age Limit: No Upper Age Limit
Qualifying Examination: A candidate must have passed L.L.B or 5-Year Integrated L.L.B (Hons.) or its equivalent from a recognized institute/university.
Minimum Marks: A candidate must have secured 55% aggregate marks (50% marks for SC/ST) in the qualifying exam.
Note: The candidate must have passed/appeared in the final semester/final year examination of the qualifying examination on the date of his/her admission.
CLAT 2022 Exam Pattern
The Exam pattern is yet to be released for CLAT 2022. The candidates can refer to the following exam pattern mentioned below.
- Total Marks – The maximum marks for the CLAT 2022 UG are 150, and for PG are 120.

CLAT 2022 Syllabus
The CLAT 2022 shall be conducted in offline mode where the paper will have 150 questions from five different subjects including English (Comprehension), General Knowledge & Current Affairs, Elementary Mathematics (Numerical Ability), Legal Aptitude and Logical Reasoning. Scope and coverage of questions under different subject areas:
- Current Affairs including General Knowledge: This section would again consist of passages instead of direct questions that were asked earlier. The passages would again be of 450 words each and the same would be derived from news, journals, etc.Questions based on such passages would be asked. Such a question can cover the static portion as well, candidates are therefore advised not to forgo the static portion entirely. Reading Newspapers daily, specifically, articles containing any Bill or Judgments or legal information should help in preparing for this section.

2. Legal Reasoning: This section will test the candidate’s interest in the study of law, research aptitude, and problem-solving ability. Questions would again be based on passages relating to facts or scenarios involving legal matters.
The passage would contain certain rules and principles which should be identified and accordingly applied to the questions. The passages would be approximately 450 words each.

3. Quantitative Aptitude: The Quantitative Technique or Maths section will include short sets of facts or propositions, graphs, or other textual, pictorial, or diagrammatic representations of numerical information, followed by a series of questions.
The questions will be in the form of Data Interpretation i.e. candidates would be required to infer information from the given passage and answer accordingly.

4. Logical Reasoning: The purpose of the logical reasoning section is to test the candidate’s ability to identify patterns, logical links, and rectify illogical arguments. The questions would be based on the passage of 300 words.

5. English: English section will test the candidates’ proficiency in English based on comprehension passages. Students will be given passages of about 450 words each and such passages could be fiction/ non-fiction, contemporary/historical, etc.
Candidates will be questioned on their understanding of the passage and its central theme, meanings of words used therein, etc. The inference would be key here, candidates will have to comprehend the main idea discussed in the passage including any counter-arguments used in the passage.

CLAT 2022 Admit Card

CLAT 2022 Preparation Plan and Tips
In the below section, subject-wise preparation strategies for CLAT 2022 are mentioned.
English Language Preparations
- All the questions from this section are framed from the 10+2 level syllabus.
- The topic of the passage can vary; it can be technical, scientific topics, or current issues, or historical events of significance, but prior knowledge in these subjects is not required.
- Understand the main focus of the passage first, followed by 5 W’s- Who, What, Why, When, and Where.
- Vocabulary questions are of 2 types, i.e. the meaning of a word or phrase or the meaning of a word or phrase in the context of the passage
- Regularly read the editorial sections of reputed newspapers and magazines, especially if written by imminent lawyers on issues about the law.
- With the help of grammar books of 10+2 level, candidates can have a clear idea of all the topics.
Logical Reasoning Preparations
- Must identify all the premises along with the conclusion by which the subject matter can be identified.
- Analyse all the sets of arguments.
- Try to read all the sections carefully and make it a habit to avoid some misleading questions.
- Sometimes the same passage can be used for English and Legal Reasoning. Consider this while preparing.
- Candidates should solve all the previous year’s question papers along with the sample question. Try to use some reputed sources such as the Consortium of NLUs.
Quantitative Techniques Preparations
- Practice all the primary topics from 10th and 12th standard mathematics books to clear any doubts.
- Questions in the exam comprise graphs, pictorial representations of data, tables, etc.
- Do make a formula cheat sheet and try to stick it whenever you see it a lot, like in front of your study table to memorise all the important formulas without any difficulties.
Legal Reasoning Preparations
- All types of factual information will be there in the passages. It will help to gain some basic legal awareness.
- Divide all the main topics into subtopics to keep the words like ‘AND’ and ‘OR’. A similar case needs to be repeated with facts.
- Never apply biases or previous knowledge of the law to the answer you mark. Try to answer based on details given to you.
- The section of logical reasoning along with legal reasoning and the English language is almost similar. Before preparation, try to keep it in mind.
- Try to practise all the sections of legal reasoning daily for not less than 30 minutes.
- It is very important to go through all the essays and columns by prominent lawyers, judges and other law experts. You can also watch lectures by famous lawyers on YouTube.
Current Affairs & General Knowledge Preparations
- Questions can come from any prominent topic. Candidate’s need to be aware of current international and national news.
- Try to browse through all the reputed newspapers and magazines daily.
- Do watch unbiased news on different topics as it also helps for the preparation for the exam.
- Practise a Current Affairs passage daily.
