Current Affairs for CLAT 2023: November (Part I)

Taking CLAT this year and wondering how to prepare for the current affairs section? Here’s a list of important current affairs for November with tips and tricks on how to score more.

1. India hosted the UNSC-CTC meet in Mumbai and Delhi.

  • 2-day meeting of the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee.
  • Location: Mumbai and Delhi.
  • Hosted by the Ministry of External Affairs.
  • Meet on countering the use of new and external technologies for terrorism purposes
  • A non-binding declaration known as the Delhi Declaration was adopted for the same.
  • India will donate USD 500,000 to the UN Trust Fund for counter-terrorism.

2. New President of Brazil was elected.

  • Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva elected as the new President of Brazil.
  • Co-founder of the Worker’s Party.
  • Succeeded Jair Bolsonaro.
  • He got 50.9% votes while Bolosnaro got 49.1%.
  • This was the country’s closest election in 3 decades.

3. GoI appointed Chairperson of new Law Commission.

  • 22nd Law Commission.
  • Rituraj Awasthi was declared the Chairperson of 22nd Law Commission.
  • The Commission will have a tenure of 3 years.
  • This commission had been vacant since the retirement of Justice BS Chauhan in 2018.
  • It will discuss matters related to Uniform Civil Code.
  • Law Commission of India- originally constituted in 1955, reconstituted every 3 years.

4. SC upholds the constitutionality of the 103rd Amendment.

  • 103rd Amendment- Provided reservation to Economically Weaker Sections from unreserved categories.
  • Reservation for admission in educational institutions and government jobs.
  • SC upheld the constitutional validity in a 3:2 majority.
  • Held that this does not violate equality and basic structure of the Indian Constitution.
  • It was the first time that a constitution bench hearing was streamed live.

5. ICC re-elected Greg Barclay as Independent Chair.

  • Position: Independent Chair.
  • ICC- International Cricket Council.
  • For a second 2-year term.
  • BCCI Secretary Jay Shah was elected as Head of ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee.
  • CEO of ICC- Geoff Allardice.
  • Headquarters- Dubai, UAE.
  • Established in 1909.

6. Tenure of ED Chief extended.

  • Enforcement Directorate Chief Sanjay Kumar Mishra’s tenure was extended by a year till 18th November 2023.
  • This will be his 5th year as the ED Chief.
  • ED is the central investigative agency under the Ministry of Finance to enforce acts like PMLA and FEMA.
  • ED Headquarters: New Delhi
  • Year of establishment- 1957.

7. New Election Commissioner of India.

  • Arun Goel, a retired IAS officer, became the new election commissioner of India.
  • He was appointed by President Draupadi Murmu.
  • He is the newest member of the 3-member election commission which consists of- a) Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and b) Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey.
  • Election Commission headquarters- New Delhi
  • Year of Establishment- 1950.

8. SC on short tenures of Chief Election Commissioners

  • SC recently called out the Central Government for the short tenure of the Chief Election Commissioners.
  • The tenure of CECs has come down to a few hundred days
  • Between the years 1950 and 1996, only 10 CECs were appointed.
  • However, in the last 26 years, 15 CECs have been appointed.
  • It held that Article 324 of the Indian Constitution, which deals with the appointment of election commissioners, does not provide procedures for appointments in the poll panel.

9. Tamil Nadu’s First Biodiversity Heritage Site

  • TN recently issued a notification declaring Madurai district’s Arittapatti and Meenakshipuram as the state’s first biodiversity heritage site.
  • Biodiversity heritage sites (BHS) are notified areas that are unique and ecologically fragile ecosystems.
  • These ecosystems host one or more components like rare and threatened species, keystone species, species of evolutionary significance, etc.
  • This BHS is historically significant because of the presence of several megalithic structures, rock-cut temples, and inscriptions etc.
