Arushi Mehta, BA LLB, a 2nd-year student at National Law University, Ranchi, and a student editor at CLATalogue, wrote this preparatory article.
One of the biggest things I realized while preparing for CLAT UG is that reading passages slowly does not automatically mean reading them well. In the beginning, I used to believe that I had to read every line with the same level of attention, no matter how long the passage was or how little time I had.
That approach only made me slower and more anxious. Over time, I understood that CLAT is not testing whether I can memorize every word in a passage. It is testing whether I can understand the passage quickly, identify its main idea, and answer questions under pressure. That is exactly why skimming became such an important part of my strategy.
For me, skimming means I do a quick first read to get the shape of the passage before I get lost in the details. I do not mean rushing through it blindly. I mean reading in a way that helps me understand what the passage is about, what tone it carries, and what kind of argument or information it is presenting.
In passages for English, legal reasoning, and critical thinking, this first 5-minute overview matters a lot. If I can tell what the passage is discussing, whether it is explaining a concept, comparing ideas, or presenting a situation, I can approach the questions with much more confidence. The point is not to understand every single line perfectly on the first pass. The point is to build a clear mental map of the passage as early as possible.
What helped me most was dividing passages according to familiarity. Not every passage should be treated in the same way. Some passages are highly familiar, some are moderately familiar, and some are completely unfamiliar. If I already know the topic well, I try to skim as much as possible. I do not waste time over-reading something I already understand. I read carefully enough to catch the author’s direction, but I do not slow myself down unnecessarily.
For moderately familiar passages, I use a mix of reading and skimming. I slow down where needed, especially if the passage becomes dense or shifts direction, but I still keep moving. For passages that are low or zero familiarity, I do not force myself to skim too aggressively. That can be dangerous because if the topic is unfamiliar, reading too quickly may make me miss the core idea completely. In such cases, I slow down just enough to understand the structure properly. So for me, skimming is not a fixed rule. It depends on how familiar I am with the topic.
Another habit that improved my comprehension a lot was reading the questions first. I used to think reading the passage first was always correct, but CLAT is not that simple. When I look at the questions before reading deeply, I already know what I am supposed to extract from the passage. That changes the way I read.
I stop reading passively and start reading with purpose. I know whether I should be looking for the author’s tone, a specific inference, a statement that strengthens or weakens an argument, or a detail hidden in the middle of the passage. This saves time because I am not going back and forth aimlessly. I go into the passage with an idea of what I need from it. That made a big difference for me, especially in longer passages where it is easy to lose track of what actually matters.
One thing I also had to learn was not to get emotionally stuck on difficult lines. Occasionally a passage contains one sentence that looks complicated, and the instinct is to stop there and keep rereading it. I used to do that a lot. But often, that only wastes time and breaks the flow.
What I realized later is that many CLAT passages are designed so that the meaning becomes clearer when you read the whole paragraph or the whole argument, not when you obsess over one sentence in isolation. So now, if I come across a line that feels dense, I read it once, keep moving, and rely on the surrounding context to clarify it. That does not mean ignoring difficulty. It means not letting one difficult patch ruin the whole reading process.
Another useful thing is to focus on the passage’s structure instead of trying to remember every detail. Most passages have a clear pattern. They begin with an introduction to the topic, then develop a contrast, an example, a critique, or a conclusion. If I can identify where the passage is heading, I do not need to store every line in memory.
I just need to know the role each paragraph is playing. That alone makes the questions much easier because I know where to look mentally when a question refers to a particular argument or shift in tone. In a way, skimming is not about reading less. It is about reading smartly enough to remember the right things.
I also found it very important to practice skimming under time pressure. Skimming is a skill, not just a habit. The more I practiced it, the better I got at knowing when to slow down and when to move quickly.
At first, I would either skim too much and miss meaning or read too slowly and lose time. But once I kept practicing with timed passages, I started developing a better instinct. I began recognizing signal words, shifts in tone, and the difference between supporting detail and main idea. That only came because I kept doing it repeatedly.
The last thing I would add is that skimming works best when it is paired with calmness. If I panic, I stop skimming properly and start reading in a scattered way. So before a section, I remind myself that I do not need to understand everything at once.
I only need to understand enough to answer the questions accurately. That mindset makes the whole process less stressful. CLAT rewards clarity more than panic, and skimming is really a way of creating that clarity quickly.
In the end, skimming is not about reading carelessly. It is about reading strategically. It helps me understand the passage faster, identify what matters, and avoid wasting time on what does not. By combining skimming with question-first reading, familiarity-based pacing, and steady practice, I became much better at handling CLAT passages without feeling overwhelmed. That is what makes skimming so useful. It gives you speed, but more importantly, it gives you direction.
