How to Clear Backlogs While Preparing for CLAT UG?
This preparatory article has been written by Advita Agrawal, AIR 842 [CLAT UG 2024]. Advita is currently pursuing BA-LLB from Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur.
A common, and often crippling, hurdle for any CLAT UG aspirant is the accumulation of backlogs. Whether due to an inevitable period of inability to study effectively, such as illness or personal commitments, or a delayed start to the preparation journey, backlogs can grow rapidly.
This accumulation inevitably leads to immense mental stress and a paralyzing sense of being overwhelmed as the examination date approaches. The typical, yet flawed, response to this situation not only fails to resolve the issue but actively worsens it, creating a cycle of ever-increasing academic burden commonly referred to as the “Catch-Up First” strategy.
The “Catch-Up First” Strategy
A prevalent, but ultimately counterproductive, approach adopted by many aspirants is to completely halt current studies and focus solely on clearing the accumulated backlog. While this may seem logical, “I must fix the past before I move to the present”, it is a recipe for disaster in a time-bound, competitive exam like CLAT.
A classic scenario is when an aspirant realizes in April 2026 (with the CLAT exam scheduled for December 2026) that they have a significant backlog from the first three months of preparation (January, February, and March). The common, emotionally driven reaction is to dedicate April, and possibly May, entirely to covering this missed content. In doing so, they pause all current preparation.
This approach creates a dangerous domino effect. By the time the aspirant finishes the January–March content and is ready to move forward, they have already created a fresh backlog for April and May.
This pushes the entire preparation schedule further behind, intensifies stress, and leaves the aspirant feeling perpetually frustrated, anxious, and under constant time pressure. This cycle is unsustainable and rarely leads to effective preparation. It sacrifices the present to fix the past, only to find that the present has become the new problem.
The Integrated Approach: A Smarter Strategy
A far more effective, psychologically sound, and less stressful method is to adopt an integrated approach. This strategy is built on prioritizing current material to prevent new backlogs while systematically reducing past backlogs through dedicated effort. The key is to manage two parallel tracks of study simultaneously.
General Knowledge & Current Affairs
For General Knowledge and Current Affairs, this integrated approach is especially crucial due to the time-sensitive nature of the content. If the backlog spans January, February, and March, the strategy should be:
1. Prioritize the Present (70% of Effort): Studying the current month’s content (e.g., April) must be non-negotiable. This ensures you stay updated with recent events, which are often the most relevant for the exam.
2. Systematic Backlog Coverage (30% of Effort): Allocate specific extra hours daily to cover backlog topics. For instance, if you study GK & CA for 5 hours daily, dedicate 1–2 hours specifically to older months. This ensures consistent and gradual coverage without disrupting current preparation.
This dual approach requires extra effort in the short term but yields significant long-term benefits. It prevents backlog expansion and frees up valuable time closer to the exam for mocks and revision.
Other Subjects: Practice-Centric Strategy
Subjects like English Language, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Techniques require a slightly different approach. These are skill-based subjects where understanding and application matter more than memorization.
The first step, regardless of backlog, is to build strong conceptual clarity. Aspirants must understand:
- How inferences are drawn
- The structure of arguments
- Basic legal principles (e.g., torts, contracts)
- Application of formulas in quantitative techniques
A superficial understanding will lead to repeated mistakes in mocks. Once concepts are clear, improvement comes through consistent and focused practice.
Instead of spending excessive time covering backlog theory, aspirants should:
- Prioritize current concepts
- Transition quickly to high-volume practice
- Use sectional tests to strengthen application, speed, and accuracy
Since skills are transferable, practicing current topics also improves the ability to solve backlog questions.
A Practical Timeline
A practical approach is to clear a backlog of 2–3 months within the same month or at most within two months. This may require sacrificing some time from other activities, but the extra effort ensures that you are not left struggling later while others focus on mocks and scoring improvements.
Conclusion
Dealing with backlogs effectively requires discipline, strategy, and the right mindset. The most successful approach involves:
- Recognizing the nature of each subject
- Prioritizing current content to stop further backlog accumulation
- Allocating dedicated time daily to gradually reduce backlog
This integrated method transforms what may seem like an overwhelming challenge into a manageable and structured process. With consistency and smart planning, backlogs can be overcome without compromising overall preparation.
