In this conversation with CLATalogue, Srinjoy Das (NUJS) talks about his law school journey and the motivation that led him to pursue law.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Srinjoy Das. I currently work as a correspondent for LiveLaw, covering the Calcutta High Court and its Circuit Benches. I completed my law school journey specializing in BA LLB (Hons) from NUJS Kolkata in 2022, and completed my LLM in Intellectual Property Law from NUJS in 2023.

How did you start your journey in the field of law?

I began at NUJS in 2017, straight out of school. I don’t have any lawyers in my immediate family, so law was a peculiar choice, but I’ve always been motivated to pursue uncharted avenues while keeping within the fore corners of my interest of reading and writing and knowledge of legal affairs.

How were your initial years in the law school?

Intimidating. It was honestly very daunting to walk into one of the most revered institutions in the country with some of the sharpest young minds around.

What motivated you to pursue law as a career?

I have always been a fierce reader, and fact hoarder. Initially my interest in law grew out of a curiosity to understand how the Indian polity and legal system works. Later, having pursued Political science in school, I developed a deeper interest in understanding the nuances Constitutional law, and it all began from there.

Tell us a bit about your experience while taking the entrance test for admission into LLM courses. How was that experience different from the time you took the entrance test for UG?

CLAT PG is markedly different from CLAT UG. Not in the least because it is entirely Law-based, as opposed to the multiple different segments under the CLAT UG paper, but also because the questions are far more technical and subject-based, pertaining to all the papers studied by a student in the UG Course. While the prep for CLAT UG is more oriented towards problem-solving and analytical aptitude, CLAT PG is far more information-oriented and subject-based.
What were your top 3 sources of information while preparing for the law entrance exam? Did you prepare for the exam all by yourself?
1. Previous year’s Question papers- These were the holy grail when preparing for CLAT PG, at least for me.
2. Seniors notes pertaining to all subjects in the CLAT syllabus from UG course
3. YouTube videos
Yes, I prepared all by myself, without any external assistance.

What would you say sets apart your story from others?

I wouldn’t say my story is ‘set-apart’ from others. I am very much a part of where I come from. My story is intrinsically connected to all those I completed my law school journey with, as well as those who aim to follow the path I’ve taken.
I would say that anyone who is aiming to do an LLM, should evaluate what they are looking for, from such a course. Unlike LLB, an LLM course is not the basic requirement to be employable in the legal field. It is very research-oriented.
As such, in my experience, an LLM is a much more intensive and inclusive experience, which aims to teach students the skill of critical thinking, which may sometimes be lost out in the employment-oriented mindset with which students approach an LLB degree.

Any advice you’d like to pass on to law school aspirants and law students?

Keep going; you will get there in the end. My advice is plainly that law students, in fact, any students should remain motivated to achieve what they set out to do.
Never stop learning. None of us are finished packages, and it is important always to remain humble and remain a devoted student of the subject. Never be afraid to make mistakes.
