What does NIRF mean?
The full form of NIRF is ‘National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)’. The NIRF. launched in 2015 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, is a system designed to rank higher educational institutions nationwide. The framework assesses institutions based on several parameters, including Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR), which considers student strength, faculty-student ratio, and the availability of resources.
Parameters for Ranking
- Research and Professional Practices (RP) focus on research output, quality of publications, and professional practices.
- Graduation Outcomes (GO) measure student placements, higher studies, and graduation rates.
- Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) evaluate the representation of women and economically and socially challenged students, along with outreach programs.
- Lastly, Perception (PR) gauges the reputation of the institution among peers and the public.
Together, these parameters aim to create a comprehensive and transparent ranking system, encouraging institutions to improve and maintain high standards of education and research.

Law School Ranking in India for 2024
The rankings reflect a mix of government and private institutions, with criteria including teaching, learning resources, research output, graduation outcomes, and institutional perception.

While National Law School of India University (Bengaluru), National Law University Delhi, Nalsar University of Law and National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata have retained the first four ranks this year well, Symbiosis Pune has reached the fifth spot.
Colleges like NLU Bhopal, Jamia Millia Islamia,New Delhi, GNLU, National Law Institute University, Bhopal have seen a fall in their ranking. On the other hand National Law University Odisha has jumped from Rank 30 to Rank 26, NUSRL, Ranchi has moved from Rank 24 to Rank 22.
The 2024 rankings highlight the dominance of National Law Universities (NLUs) while also showcasing the presence of private law schools like Symbiosis among the top-ranked institutions.
