In this conversation with CLATalogue, Sakshi Sutrave from Seth Shankarlal Lahoti Law College, Karnataka reflects on her Journey through Law School

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am Sakshi Sutrave, a law Student hailing from a small yet historically well-known town named Basavakalyan in Karnataka. I have pursued my Bachelor’s in Science from GUK, Karnataka and I am currently doing my undergraduate law studies at Seth Shankarlal Lahoti Law College, Kalaburagi ( Karnataka). I love to play badminton, read fictional stories, meet new people and learn new things from them.
How did you start your journey in the field of law?
During my school days, I was always very active in debate competitions and essay writing. One topic that always fascinated me was the Indian Constitution. My interest in law as a career started from there. However, things did not go as planned. After completing my 12th grade, I wanted to pursue law, but my parents had different ideas. They forced me to take up a Bachelor’s degree in Science. Despite my reluctance, I joined the course and completed it successfully.
However, the desire to study law never left me. I kept fighting with my parents to let me pursue my passion. I was determined to stand up for myself and make the right decision. Finally, I stood my ground, and my parents agreed to let me join a law course.
I am happy to say that I am now pursuing law, and it feels like the right choice. I am grateful for the opportunity to study something that I am truly passionate about.
How were your initial years in the law school?
During my initial years at law school, I found myself struggling to keep pace with the rigorous academic demands of the program. The first year was particularly challenging, as I had to get used to a new learning environment and a new way of thinking about the law. Despite the difficulties, I persevered and gradually gained a better understanding of the curriculum.
As I progressed through the program, I began to experience a sense of excitement and enthusiasm for the subject matter. I found myself getting more deeply engaged with the specifics of the law and the intricacies of legal reasoning. This newfound passion for the law was a welcome surprise, and it motivated me to work even harder to achieve my academic goals.
Looking back, I see those early struggles as a valuable learning experience that helped me develop the skills and mindset needed to succeed in the field of law. While it was a challenging road, I am grateful for the knowledge and insights that I gained along the way.
What motivated you to pursue law as a career?
Throughout my life, I have always harbored a strong desire to assist people and bring about a positive change in their lives. I think that the law is an incredibly potent instrument that has the power to bring about social justice and revolutionize the world. My ultimate goal is to leverage my legal expertise and proficiency to aid those who are in need and make a tangible difference in the world.
Tell us a bit about your experience while taking the entrance test for admission into UG course.
I have always been interested in pursuing a career in law, and when it came time to consider which undergraduate program to enroll in, I knew that law was the right choice for me. However, I was unsure about the entrance exams that were required to gain admission into law school.
As it turns out, I was fortunate enough to attend a college that was affiliated with the Karnataka State Law University located in Hubli. At my college, the admission process doesn’t involve any entrance exam. Instead, it’s based entirely on the percentile score of the candidate’s previous course.
To be eligible for admission, one needs to have a minimum percentile score of 50%. This means that the admission committee considers the candidate’s performance in their previous course as the primary criterion for admission. This meant that I did not have to take an entrance exam, as admission was based on my percentile.
What would you say sets apart your story from others?
My background is rooted in science, however, I made a significant career pivot to pursue the field of law. This change was a complete departure from my previous learning experiences, but it was a decision that I do not regret. The journey has been filled with challenges and obstacles, but I have learned to embrace every part of it. I take pride in my unique story, which sets me apart from others who have followed a more traditional path to law.
Any advice you’d like to pass on to law school aspirants and law students?
